Next Microsoft BI Professional - WI meeting TUESDAY, June 18th

We are very pleased to invite David DeWitt to speak to us on Big Data and the Polyface project he's leading at the Microsoft Gray Systems Lab at UW-Madison.

David DeWitt has spent thirty five years innovating in the area of very high performance database systems. Many of the techniques used by today's big data solutions were first pioneered as part of the Gamma parallel database machine project that he ran at the University of Wisconsin in the mid-1980s. In 2008 he retired from UW-Madison to start the Jim Gray Systems Lab for Microsoft. This is a small lab reporting into the SQL Server Business unit whose goal is to explore novel technologies for possible inclusion into the SQL Server product line. The recent release of SQL Server PDW AU3 is based on technology developed in his lab.

His talk will center on big data and his Polyface project. Today, many organizations have data sets in both a relational DBMS and Hadoop. While systems like Hive and Impala can be used to query HDFS-resident data, they are not capable of answering queries that combine data from the two universes of structured (relational) and unstructured (Hadoop) data. In this talk he will describe Polybase, an extension to the SQL PDW parallel database system that is capable of executing queries against both types of data.
